Carragher: Yaya Toure is good enough to be Chelsea’s Frank Lampard

Jamie Carragher believes Yaya Toure would emulate Chelsea icon Frank Lampard if the Ivorian was a member of Jose Mourinho’s team, as per the Daily Mail.

Lampard, who is now 37 years old, continued to be a first-team player at Stamford Bridge until he left the West London club in 2014. The box-to-box midfielder then went on to play for Manchester City on loan last term before joining his new club New York City in America.

And Carragher believes Toure has the ability and attributes to replace Lampard at the Blues if he was plying his trade under Mourinho.

“At his best, he could get in Mourinho’s side as the powerful, marauding midfielder who can score the goals in and around the box that Frank Lampard used to,” said Carragher. “Toure is now 32 years old and can still be the box-to-box midfielder he has been in previous years.”

Toure: Man City must aim to reach the level of Real Madrid and Barcelona

Following a disappointing campaign last term with Manuel Pellegrini’s side, it had looked like Toure was preparing to move on from the club and Sky Sports linked him with a move to Inter Milan.

However, last Monday’s opening fixture against West Brom saw a revitalised Toure return to the league, scoring once and completing 96% of his passes against the Baggies.

The Ivorian has been at the Citizens since 2010 and has scored 69 goals in 223 games, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and League Cup.

This Sunday is guaranteed to be a harder test for the Ivory Coast international as he and his team-mates will be entertaining the current Premier League champions at the Etihad.
